BREAKING | Kiir revokes appointment of some lawmakers, reinstates elected lawmakers

JUBA — South Sudan’s President Salva Kiir Mayardit has this evening issued a Republican Decree revoking the appointment of some lawmakers of the reconstituted transitional national legislative assembly.

The Revitalized Transitional Government of National Unity (RTGONU) had been running without a legitimate national legislature since the dissolution of the two houses in May this year.

Kiir reconstituted the national assembly in May, but disagreements emerged within the ruling SPLM party after elected members of parliament were intentionally left out of the of the peace parliament.

Kiir then reportedly constituted a committee to look into how the elected lawmakers were left out of the reconstituted parliament.

In a separate Republican Decree this evening, the South Sudanese president also reconstituted the Council of States, bringing to an end the reconstitution of the revitalized national legislature.

Last month, SPLM spokesman Peter Lam Both claimed that the revitalized peace agreement does not give the elected lawmakers the right to be reappointed following the signing of the 2018 peace deal.

Sources close to President Salva Kiir Mayardit told Sudans Post in June that the president was making consultations to revoke appointment of some lawmakers and reappoint the elected members of parliament.
