JUBA, JULY 2, 2023 (SUDANS POST) – President Salva Kiir Mayardit will on Monday morning travel to Western Bahr el Ghazal State capital Wau where a ceremony celebrating his nomination for president in the 2024 elections will take place on Tuesday, a presidency source said.

“The president will travel tomorrow to Western Bahr el Ghazal State’s capital, Wau, to attend the ceremony for Greater Bahr el Ghazal region to celebrate his nomination by the National Liberation Council for president in the upcoming elections,” the presidency official said.

The senior presidency official said Kiir – who is also the chairman of the ruling Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM) faction – will be accompanied by senior SPLM members Peter Lam Both, Kuol Manyang Juuk and Daniel Awet Akot.

Peter Lam is the secretary-general, while Juuk and Akot are deputy chairpersons.

“The people who will go with him are many and they are the secretary-general, honorable Peter Lam Both, that hard working man, and the two second deputies of the chairman,” the official said.

“Also, senior government officials will go with him,” the official said.

Kiir who has been South Sudan’s president since independence in 2011 was endorsed in December last year by the ruling party as the flag bearer for the party in the upcoming elections slated for end of transitional period in December 2024.

The nomination followed several days of SPLM National Liberation Council (NLC) meeting at Freedom Hall in which the party also dismissed First Vice President Machar and opposition leader Pagan Amum Okiech from the party.
