KHARTOUM – Petroleum ministers of Sudan and South Sudan meeting in the Sudanese capital Khartoum have agreed to resume oil production in most oilfields in South Sudan’s Unity state after several months of shutdown due to the outbreak of the deadly coronavirus pandemic.

South Sudan oil minister Puot Kang Chol is currently in Sudan meeting senior Sudanese officials to explore ways to boost the two country’s economies in the wake of economic crisis ushered in mainly by corruption, fall of oil prices at the international market and the outbreak of coronavirus pandemic.

In a statement to the media, minister of petroleum, energy and mining Kairi Abdel Rahman said the two countries have agreed to increase oil production in Unity state to 350,000 bpd and have also agreed to form committee to carry out the process.

“This committee would work to ensure the resumption of oil production from the block A5, Tharjiath fields in Unity state, and the start of the second operational phase in the other oil fields,” he said.
