The ambush occurred approximately seven miles along the Yei-Maridi road as the victims were travelling to the Pisak area for a community dialogue.
In a strongly worded statement, Commissioner Taban condemned the abduction as a “horrific violation of human dignity” and a “stark reminder of the fragility of peace” in the region.
He described the incident as a “serious criminal act” and an attack not only on the individuals but also on the safety and well-being of the entire Yei River County community.
The abducted paramount chief, a key traditional leader, and the two aid workers were engaged in efforts to foster dialogue and peacebuilding in the area, a region that has faced ongoing challenges due to conflict and insecurity.
The identities of the victims have not been disclosed, and no group has yet claimed responsibility for the attack. Attempts by Sudans Post to verify the details of the victims proved futile as the commissioner’s phone rang unanswered on the country’s independence day.
Mr Taban emphasised the county government’s commitment to investigating the incident thoroughly, stating, “The Government of Yei River County is committed to taking all necessary measures to investigate this incident.”
He called on those responsible to lay down their weapons and join efforts for sustainable peace and reconciliation, which he said are essential for prosperity and socio-economic development in the region.
“We do not want to see any more bloodshed, torture, ambushes, and abduction of civilians,” Seme declared. “Our people have suffered enough; let us give them a chance to enjoy the dividends of the relative peace.”
The commissioner urged relevant authorities and security organs to prioritise safeguarding civilians, pursuing justice, and ensuring such acts of violence are not repeated.
The abduction highlights the ongoing security challenges in South Sudan, where armed groups continue to pose threats to civilians, humanitarian workers, and local leaders despite efforts to maintain peace following the country’s civil war.
The incident has sparked concern among local communities and humanitarian organisations operating in Central Equatoria, where ambushes and abductions have periodically disrupted peacebuilding and development efforts. Authorities have yet to provide updates on the status of the abducted individuals or the progress of the investigation.
