JUBA – The president of South Sudan Students Union in Uganda, Gum Beny Machar, on Sunday described as “mere rumor” and “illegal” the alleged impeachment as President of the Union.

Last week, Speaker of the Union, Mamuch Deng Nyang, claimed that members had impeached the President over alleged financial misappropriation.

The Speaker also accused the President of bribery and other forms of corruption.

The Union’s President Machar said the rumors about his impeachment going around are concocted lies intended to tarnish his good image and that of the Union.

“This propagate is geared towards tarnishing my good name and it is nothing short of defamation which can only answer in the competent court of law,” Machar told Sudans Post on Sunday.

Machar said the speaker has no legal rights to sit in his comfort zone, frame charges, and single-handedly pronounce impeachment.

“The speaker or any other person has no legal rights to sit in his or her comfort zone and drums up charges against anybody and single-handedly pronounce impeachment,” he said.

“The Union in Uganda is a well-established institution with a defined and functional constitutional framework that governs its administration which can’t be run on wishes,” he added.

He said there was no parliamentary sitting conducted to impeach him.

“The impeachment conducted online, through Google forums is not only biased but totally illegal because union activities are not conducted through zoom or any other social media platforms,” he said.

The youth leader urged the members of the public to disregard and treats the impeachment claims as illegal.

Tito Telau Muorwel, Deputy Speaker of the South Sudanese Student Union in Uganda condemned the speaker for using the name of parliament to advance what he called “his selfish interest”.

“He cannot wake up from his hangover and start declaring impeachment letter when in an actual sense no parliamentary session was conducted,” Muorwel said.

Muorwel said there was no sitting conducted by the council to impeach the elected President, describing the alleged removable of the President as a “political witch-hunt”.

“The public is urged and called upon to consider what is circulating on social media as political witch-hunt being pursued against the personality of President by the Speaker and his fellow conmen on the street of Kampala,” he said.
