PARIENG – The Ruweng Administrative Area (RAA) recently announced a substantial increase in teachers’ salaries, with educators now receiving an elevated pay scale of SSP150,000 and SSP120,000.

This pay raise, effective from May 2023, applies to teachers across administrative headquarters and counties.

Speaking to Sudans Post on Friday, Mabek Nyok, the Director General of the Ministry of General Education in the RRA, said teachers with credentials now receive SSP150,000, while those without proper documentation receive 120,000 SSP, a notable jump from the previous 8,000 SSP.

The decision to bolster teachers’ salaries stemmed from concerns about declining student performance in national examinations over the past two years.

The government in May employed at least 179 teachers (comprising 40 in secondary schools and 139 in primary schools) to uplift the education system and improve students’ academic outcomes.

Nyok clarified that the salary increases, although not the earlier announced 400% by the South Sudanese government, came from a 2% oil share under the Ruweng Administrative Area government.

This significant salary adjustment intends to better support teachers across headquarters and counties, enabling them to fulfill their teaching duties effectively.

Arop Nguet Mialek, Headteacher at Nhomlau Girls Primary School in Parieng Municipality, affirmed the salary raise’s impact on teachers.

He expressed gratitude to the RAA government for initiating the contractual agreement and salary adjustments, underscoring the positive influence on education quality.

According to Nguet, the revised contracts brought secondary teachers’ salaries to 150,000 SSP and primary teachers’ salaries to 120,000 SSP, substantially enhancing their dedication to teaching.

He noted that these changes have energized teachers, emphasizing their readiness to elevate educational activities and deliver enhanced learning experiences to students and pupils across Ruweng’s schools.
