S. Sudan water minister, Egyptian envoy visit Bentiu to assess Naam river dredging project

BENTIU – South Sudan minister of water resources and irrigation, Manawa Peter Gatkuoth Gual, accompanied by the Egyptian ambassador to South Sudan, have visited Unity state’s capital Bentiu to assess launch of Naam River (also known as Bahr el Ghazal river) dredging project which is funded by the Egyptian government, according to the ministry of water resources and irrigation.

“The Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation Hon. Manawa Peter Gatkuoth and the Egyptian ambassador to South Sudan H.E Mohammed Mansur paid a visit to Unity State yesterday 01 October 2020,” a statement by the water ministry seen by Sudans Post read in part.

“The visit was part of the upcoming River Dredging Project from Unity State to Bar el Ghazal funded by the Joint Technical Cooperation between the Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation of South Sudan and the Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation of Egypt,” it added.

According to the ministry, the project, once completed, “will improve river navigation system which can enhance river transport. It can also minimize floods in Unity State and Bar el Ghazal regions.”

Egypt is a close earlier of South Sudan, the world’s youngest country. It has donated millions of dollars in aid since the country obtained its independence from Sudan in July 2011 following over two decade of deadly struggle.
