JUBA – Members of South Sudan police have arrested dozens of foreign currency dealers in the country’s capital Juba as government attempt to deal with economic crisis imposed by COVID-19, decline of oil prices and corruption, police spokesman has said.

Major General Daniel Justin, the police spokesman told Sudans Post this morning from the capital Juba that the arrests were made yesterday and this morning saying the black market dollar dealing was contributing to the failure of the country’s economy.

“Yesterday and today we made arrests of those dealing with foreign currency in the black market. These illegal dollar-dealers are contributing to the failure of our economy and the government will not allow that,” Justin said.

The arrests comes as the government is working to consolidate sources of the country’s income from non-oil revenue.

A committee headed by vice-president for economic cluster James Wani Igga is working investigating corruption in government institutions that are known source of income for the country.
