JUBA – South Sudan’s vice-president James Wani Igga has fled an assassination attempt after unidentified gunmen attacked his convoy in an area near the country’s capital Juba this afternoon, an official close to him said.

Igga’s media official, Kalisto Lado who spoke to journalists in the capital Juba following the incident this afternoon said the incident occurred a few miles from Lobonok Payam of Central Equatoria state.

Lado said the unknown gunmen killed six of the vice-president’s bodyguards and destroyed vehicles that were traveling along the way, but could not confirm if the vice-president was among those traveling.

“They destroyed the vehicle completely, six soldiers died and two more were injured,” Lado said.

“The vehicle was heading to Capato from Vice President Headquarters and then there, they were ambushed,” Lado added.
