KHARTOUM – The Sudanese government has announced that it has foiled a coup attempt that was organized and funded by associates of the country’s former President Omar al Bashir who is now being detained.

Al Bashir was removed from power in April 2019 following almost three decades in power. He was ousted after pockets of protests starting in Northern States of Sudan spread to other parts of the country demanding services and later on his departure from power.

Speaking during a press conference in Khartoum on Thursday afternoon, member of the Empowerment Removal Committee Wajdi Sali said there is a conspiracy going on to undermine the country’s transition.

“There is a conspiracy being hatched against the revolution and the elimination of the transitional authority, and we are working to stop this scheme,” he told reporters in the capital Khartoum.

“They planned through armed action to make June 30 a date to finish off the revolution, and the committee should have taken measures to stop this scheme, which is also linked to the leaders of the former regime in Kober Prison,” he added.

Saleh further revealed that phone calls have been intercepted between the ousted President Omar al Bashir, former defense minister Abdel Rahim Mohamed Hussein, key NCP figure Nafeh Ali Nafeh, and Ibahrahim Ghandour.

“We will not leave a bank account working in the currency trade, and we will not allow the existence of amounts of money that exceed the reasonable limits inside homes or storage outside the banking system,” Saleh said.
