RUMBEK — South Sudan’s Lakes State Police on Thursday arrested two police officers in connection with the death of a 27-year-old student in Rumbek town.
Maj. Gen. Enock Majok Machar, acting commissioner of police in Lakes State, confirmed to Sudans Post the arrest of two officers who shot and killed senior four-leaver Sewat Dongrin on Thursday in the Akuac residential area of Rumbek town.
“There was an incident that happened; a senior four-leaver was killed at night, and people accused are police personnel,” Major said.
Majok disclosed that the student was murdered by suspected police personnel on night patrol.
“He was killed, and the people who are accused of killing are now arrested, and they are under police custody in Akuac police station under investigation,” he said.
He said the arrest of the suspects followed an intense manhunt by police.
“The first mandate of the police here is security. Security of the people and their property. These are our mandates as police, and we condemned this incident.”
For his part, Dr. Teran Madit Teran, Medical Director of Rumbek State Hospital, confirmed the fact that the body was delivered to the facility at midnight.
“Upon examination, the patient was already dead, and he had sustained a gunshot wound to the chest. So, when I saw the body, there were two gunshots on the upper left side, which is the entry, and the exit was also on the left side of the chest,” Madit said.
He claimed that the student’s serious bullet wounds caused significant bleeding, which ultimately led to his death.
Meanwhile, Daniel Laat Kon Ater, Coordinator of Lakes State Community Empowerment for Progress Organization (CEPO), denounced the murder of a student in the Akuac residential area.
“You know, this is a very unfortunate situation, and we appreciate the state government for apprehending the suspects behind this killing,” Laat said.
Laat demanded that the state government bring the suspected police personnel to court so they might face charges.
