KUAJOK — Local authorities of Warrap State of South Sudan on Thursday suspended operations of traditional courts in order to enable local residents to concentrate on farming during the cultivation season.

John Mabior Marup, the commissioner of Twic County, stated in a phone interview with Sudans Post on Thursday that suspending the operations of local courts will allow the community to concentrate on farming, thereby enhancing food production in the county.

“We are here telling people to go and prepare the land and till it. Go to your villages or bomas and prepare yourselves for cultivation and never attend the court cases anymore,” said Mabior.

Mabior stated that permitting local court cases to proceed would hinder residents from participating in farming activities.

“It is time to do farming, as hunger is affecting us now. Let’s fight it off through farming,” he said.

Mabior stated that the courts would remain closed until September, when the new yields are expected to be tested.

“In all the villages, if the local person comes to you, the chief, to report about the cases of hunger, like someone who owes someone a cow to sell for hunger, then address that case. However, traditional courts no longer have the authority to settle other cases.

The commissioner directed paramount chiefs and executive chiefs to guarantee that these directives are implemented effectively.

He acknowledges the severity of the hunger situation while emphasizing the need to address cases related to hunger among the local population.

Many states in South Sudan are struggling to alleviate the suffering of their local population through farming, as the national Ministry of Agriculture has pledged to do mechanized farming this year to help the local population produce enough food.

It remains to be seen how the new initiatives that the national agriculture ministry announced will help boost the farming techniques in the country.
