JUBA, JULY 1, 2023 (SUDANS POST) – A group of Catholic bishops is calling on the transitional government to expedite the implementation process of the revitalized peace agreement to enable for free and fair elections.

In a statement signed by eight catholic bishops, the men of God called for a new permanent constitution and population census for the world’s youngest country to be able to conduct the elections slated for December 2024.

“We appeal to the international community, we appeal to the government of national unity to at least expedite the implementation of the peace agreement,” Stephen Ameyu, the Metropolitan Archbishop of Juba, told journalists on Friday.

“Above all, we need the working out of new constitution and make count in order to know how many people are there in South Sudan so that we can easily have election in the next year,” the man of God added.

He called on the general public, the government, and the church to work for peace and reconciliation.

“This is the time where all of us expect to work for peace and reconciliation These two things have been always illusive for us people of South Sudan,” he said.

“So, together with the government, bishops and all the faithful, we must all work for peace and reconciliation and I ask all of you to pray continually for these two important things, peace and reconciliation,” he added.
