Two former Nakhchivan ministers arrested

The Former Interior Minister and Minister of Education of the Autonomous Republic have been arrested.


The Former Interior Minister and Minister of Education of the Autonomous Republic have been arrested.

The former Minister of Education of Nakhchivan Mammad Garibov has been arrested. Charges have not been confirmed by the Prosecutor General's Office at this time.

Mammad Garibov served as Minister of Education of the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic in 2016-2018.

Shortly before Garibov's arrest, former Minister of Internal Affairs of the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic, Lieutenant General Ahmad Ahmadov was arrested and charged with embezzlement.

This was confirmed by the press service of the Prosecutor General's Office.

Ahmadov has been remanded for four months during the preliminary investigation. The former minister is reportedly being held in the Baku Pre-Trial Detention Center in Kurdakhani.

Ahmad Ahmadov, 69, served as Interior Minister of Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic from 2000 to 2017. Before becoming a minister, he worked as the head of the Department for Combating Organized Crime in the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Autonomous Republic in 1997-2000.

Three years ago, Ahmad Ahmadov's brother, Avaz Ahmadov, was also arrested on charges of beating a man who gave him money on interest and holding him hostage to demand the return of the money.

During his tenure as minister, Ahmadov was also accused of torturing citizens. Reports of torture by law enforcement agencies in Azerbaijan are officially refuted.
