62.

When darkness sets in, he leaves the rocky cavity and stealthily moves
                       toward the girl's house.

He presses his head against a crack in the wall of the house.
He sees the girl cleaning up something inside. He calls her in a very

                       low voice.

                                                   THE AMERASIAN
Hi, I'm here. Come out and talk to
                                     me, please.

THE GIRL is surprised, and she perks her ears up to listen. She stands
still for a moment and then silently walks around toward the back of the
house to meet him. The Amerasian sees her face: pale and slightly

greenish. He takes her hand and leads her to a tree behind the house.
She follows him silently. He helps her sit down against the tree. Her
head is bent, and she says nothing. He holds her hand tightly and
                       speaks earnestly.

                                                   THE AMERASIAN (CONT'D)
I am so sorry. I did something bad
                                     and unforgivable. But please
understand that it was because I
                                     love you too much.

The girl still doesn't speak. Her silence scares him deeply.

                                                   THE AMERASIAN (CONT'D)
I acted so badly. I am sure your
parents will never forgive me. I
don't know what to do to earn your
                                     forgiveness. Please tell me what
you are thinking, what you want.
But don't stay silent because that
hurts me and makes me suffer. Maybe
                                                   (MORE)
I should turn myself in so that I
                                     can receive a punishment
                                     commensurate with my crime.
