No fewer than 105 Jewish children and young adults took a grueling journey from the Ukrainian port city of Odessa to arrive in Berlin on Friday.

Two buses transported the children, teenagers, young adults and their companions to a hotel in the west of the city, with police cordoning off the street.

The trip was organised by the Jewish cultural and educational society Chabad Berlin in tandem with a children’s home run by Odessa’s Jewish community.

Some of the children are orphans, while others were sent by their parents or other relatives on the 2,000-kilometre journey via Moldova, Romania, Hungary and the Czech Republic.

The youngest child was a baby born in January, and there were also several infants.

Israeli Ambassador, Jeremy Issacharoff, welcomed the children during a brief visit to the hotel, where the group plans to stay for the time being.
