One hundred and eighty-two people died in Kano due to fire outbreaks, with N660 million worth of properties destroyed in 2021, says the Kano State Fire Service.

Saminu Abdullahi, the spokesman for the firefighters, disclosed this in a statement on Tuesday.

Nonetheless, Mr Abdullahi stated that the fire service saved 1,240 lives and properties worth N1.58 billion in 831 fire incidents recorded in the state.

He also noted that the service got false alarms during the period under review.

“The service responded to 817 rescue calls and 201 false alarms from residents of the state,” stated Mr Abdullahi. “In the year under review from the 27 fire stations across the state, we rescued 25 of the 150 people that fell, trapped in open water well.”

The fire service spokesman attributed the fire incidents in Kano to the careless handling of cooking gas and inferior electrical appliances.

The service, he said, also rescued one person electrocuted at a railway cabin in the Kofar Nassarawa area of the Kano metropolis.

Mr Abdullahi further disclosed that the service also attended to 655 road crashes and two collapsed buildings, with six persons found dead and three trapped animals rescued.

He advised motorists to abide by traffic regulations to avoid road crashes.

The Kano fire service spokesman also urged parents to be vigilant “to monitor their wards, especially swimming in fonds and playing in dangerous places.”
