Gambia’s President Adama Barrow has been reelected after the nation’s presidential election on December 4.

After his landslide victory at the presidential poll, Mr Barrow has again proved to be the peoples’ choice, defeating five other contenders.

Contesting on the National People’s Party (NPP) platform, Barrow polled 457,519 votes against Ousainou Darboe of the United Democratic Party (UDP), who garnered 238,253 votes.

Other contenders were Halifa Sallah of the People’s Democratic Organisation for Independence and Socialism (PDOIS), Abdoulie Jammeh of the National Unity Party (NUP), Mama Kandeh of the Gambia Democratic Congress (GDC) and Essa Faal, an independent candidate.

Alieu Momar Njai, the nation’s Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) chairman, announced Mr Barrow’s victory on Sunday evening.

“Having received 457, 519 votes in the election, I hereby declare Adama Barrow duly elected to serve as president of The Gambia,” announced Mr Alieu.

Mr Barrow took over from long-time dictator Yahya Jammeh in 2016, who ruled the Gambia for 22 years.

Mr Jammeh was sent to exile in Equatorial Guinea following his failure to accept Mr Barrow’s election victory.
