Liverpool on Sunday night defeated Chelsea 11-10 on penalties to win Carabao Cup at the Wembley stadium.

Owned by American company Fenway Sports Group, Liverpool secured the first major silverware of the English football season at Chelsea’s expense amid growing resentment against Putin and other Kremlin allies including Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich over Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

Liverpool dominated 55 per cent of ball possession with 20 shots on target, while Chelsea had 11 shots on target with 45 per cent  ball possession.

In the 67th minutes, Matip scored for Liverpool but it was disallowed after VAR check. Similarly, Romelu Lukaku netted a goal in the 90+8 but was cancelled as VAR showed Lukaku was offside.

With both teams unable to score in 120 minutes, the highly competitive game extended into penalty shoot out that ended in favour of the Reds.

Kepa Arrizabalaga, who came in in the extra time for the penalty shoot out, missed Chelsea’s eleventh penalty, making the score 11-10 in favour of Liverpool.

Speaking with Skysport after the game, Liverpool coach, Jurgen Klopp, said “I would have been fine with 90 minutes,1-0 Liverpool and we go home.

“I’m happy for the people, in difficult times, to celebrate something like this. It’s really nice. Chelsea were incredibly strong, we matched each other. You need to have luck, we needed luck tonight. The game could have been 5-5.”
