On Monday, the Anambra Traditional Rulers Council alleged that the former state governor, Willie Obiano, was being treated unjustly by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission.

In a statement signed by its chairman and Obi of Onitsha, Nnaemeka Achebe, the council stated that it was embarrassed over a viral video showing Mr Obiano dressed in red boxer shorts and a white T-shirt in the EFCC custody.

“The traditional rulers are utterly shocked and disappointed that someone of the status of a former state governor would be treated in such a distasteful and reprehensible manner by an agency of the Federal Government.

“We are equally disturbed that such a video clip found its way out of the highly secure environment of the EFCC onto social media,” the council said.

It alleged that the video was “obviously” leaked to cause embarrassment to the former governor and Anambra indigenes.

The council urged President Muhammadu Buhari and the Attorney-General, Abubakar Malami, to call the EFCC to order “regarding the appalling condition Obiano is being subjected to”.

The council further stated, “without prejudice to the responsibility of the EFCC to carry out its statutory duties, such treatment to Obiano is dehumanising and would not bring any value to whatever investigation being conducted by the EFCC”.

Mr Obiano was arrested on Thursday at Murtala Mohammed International Airport, Lagos and brought to Abuja on Friday morning.

The arrest came hours after handing over to the newly sworn-in Anambra Governor, Charles Chukwuma Soludo.
