English Premier League side Aston Villa Thursday appointed former Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard as their head coach, following the sack of their former coach Dean Smith.

The club disclosed this in a statement on Thursday but did not state how many years contract they signed with Gerrard.

“The board of Aston Villa are delighted to appoint Steven as our new head coach,” Christian Purslow, Aston Villa CEO, was quoted to have said in the statement.

“It has been very clear in our discussions with him that Steven’s coaching ambitions, philosophy and values entirely match those of Aston Villa,” Mr Purslow added.

Aston Villa are currently 16th on the EPL log, having won just three games, lost seven and drawn one so far this season.

Gerrard, 41, joined Glasgow Rangers in 2018, leading the club to the Scottish Premiership title last season.

He made 504 appearances for Liverpool, scoring 120 goals. At the national level, he made over 100 appearances for England.
