Jennifer Douglas-Abubakar, the estranged wife of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, has accused her husband of using security aides and thugs to threaten her for seeking a divorce.

In a statement published by The Trent, Ms Abubakar noted that she had been threatened and monitored by security personnel linked to Mr Abubakar.

“Since this incident, I fear for my safety and that of my kids. His Excellency’s security operatives especially Ibro and others have been making threats and calling my relatives, friends, and staff and searching for my assets to seize and monitoring my phone calls and those of friends and relatives,” claimed Ms Abubkar. “For that reason, I have exited my law firm and sold all my assets, and moved abroad until peace reigns.”

In the statement, Ms Abubakar clarified the issues around the divorce, stating that it was a result of Mr Abubakar’s new marriage to the Moroccan bride.

“On June 26, 2021, I asked His Excellency to grant me a divorce in light of the breakdown of our marriage. And, during that period, I told his Excellency that I remain at his Excellency’s service to continue to assist him in his activities even If I am no longer married to him,” she added in her statement.

Ms Abubakar also commented on the controversy surrounding the Dubai residence, dismissing claims that she attempted to take over the properties.

The statement noted that there would be no further discussion on the Dubai residence as it is currently in litigation, adding that if she had intention to “take His Excellency’s assets, I would not have returned to him his property documents in Abuja and Jos and documents, allowed the driver to collect his cars, and gave up the house in Asokoro and Yola.”

At the time of filing this report, both spokespersons for Mr and Mrs Abubakar did not return requests seeking comments.

Last January, Peoples Gazette reported Ms Abubakar’s exit from their matrimonial home, over Mr Abubakar’s decision to take a fourth wife. The report noted that Mr Abubakar’s other wives had been more accepting of the Moroccan new wife than Mrs Douglas-Abubakar, despite her claims in the recently released statement.
