British Prime Minister Boris Johnson and his wife Carrie have announced the birth of a baby girl at a London hospital.

“The prime minister and Mrs Johnson are delighted to announce the birth of a healthy baby girl at a London hospital earlier today,” a spokeswoman for the couple announced on Thursday. “Both mother and daughter are doing very well. The couple would like to thank the brilliant NHS maternity team for all their care and support,” she said in a statement.

Mrs Johnson had announced the pregnancy in July, revealing she had a miscarriage earlier this year and that although she felt “incredibly blessed” to be pregnant again.

The baby is the couple’s second child together, after their son Wilfred was born in April 2020, though Mr Johnson has four children with his ex-wife Marina Wheeler and another child, born in 2009, as a result of an affair with art consultant Helen Macintyre.

The couple were engaged in late 2019 and got married in an intimate wedding ceremony at Westminster Cathedral in May this year.

The news of the Johnson’s new child trails the scandal Mr Johnson is facing due to accusations of a Christmas party in Downing Street last year that would have broken coronavirus restrictions.  Multiple reports note leaked footage of Mr Johnson’s then press secretary Allegra Stratton, joking about an event with “no social distancing.” Ms Stratton has since resigned.
