A new report has revealed that 1.3 million electronic vehicles were sold in China in 2020.This is as experts have predicted electronic vehicle to be the future of automobile industry.

Nigeria in February joined the rest of the world in embracing the recent innovation, unveiling its first locally assembled electric vehicle.

Tradingplatform.com, a leading online education and comparison platform for online traders, in a statement on Wednesday detailed that units of electronic vehicles sold in China between 2019 and 2020 increased by 8 percent to 1.3 million.

The statement also forecasted a 51 percent increase in the demand for electronic vehicles in 2021, after it encountered a downturn at the later part of 2020.

Tradingplatform blamed recent policy change in the electronic vehicle industry and the outbreak of COVID-19 for slowing down the growth of electronic vehicles in China.

“China is a particularly strong market for EVs where a record number of EVs were sold in 2020. However, recent policy changes around the EV industry in China and the more recent Coronavirus pandemic slowed down the strong momentum EVs once generated. Despite this, the number of EVs sold in China still saw a modest increase of 8 percent YoY from 2019-2020 to a record 1.3M units sold,” it said.

“Demand is also expected to rebound after 2020’s sharp downturn for the entire industry and EV sales are projected to increase by over 51percent to almost 2M EVs sold.”

Chris Jones, an automotive industry expert, also forecasted a boost in the China’s electronic vehicle sales in 2021.

He noted China already has an excellent network of standardized public EV chargers.

“Prospects are very good for China’s EV market in 2021. There is already an excellent network of standardized public EV chargers in China, good government support and now a return to strong consumer demand,” he said.
