Congo and Uganda have launched a joint offensive against the Islamist militia the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) on Tuesday, according to government spokespersons for both countries.

“This morning, we have launched joint air and artillery strikes against ADF camps with our Congolese allies,” read a statement from the spokesperson for Uganda’s Ministry of Defence and Veteran Affairs.

The ADF is an offshoot of the Islamic State militia and was declared a terrorist organisation by the U.S. in March.

Ugandan officials blame ADF forces for multiple attacks that have claimed at least 30 lives.

The ADF originates in Uganda, but is currently operating from bases in north-eastern Congo to launch attacks back into Uganda.

They have also been accused of launching attacks on civilians in Congo.
