Governor of Rivers State, Nyesom Wike, has threatened reimpose lockdown across the state due to rising cases of COVID-19.

The governor gave the warning on Monday as he made a statewide broadcast to Rivers residents.

Mr Wike said he may be forced to re-introduce the extreme measure if citizens do not adhere strictly to COVID-19 protocols.

“We may be constrained to re-impose the suspended COVID-19 lockdown measures across the state if the transmission of diseases continues to increase beyond tolerable limits,” Mr Wike said.

The governor also urged the residents to help curtail the situation by getting vaccinated.

“I therefore appeal to all residents to ensure to help protect yourself and loved ones and the rest of the citizens by getting your jab at designated health centers in 23 local government areas of the state as available”,  he added.

Rate of COVID-19 infections has increased rapidly in the state in the past two weeks

According to data from the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control, the state ranks third with 137 deaths and 1004 cases so far.
