#EndSARSMemorial: Police stand by as protesters march through Ibadan

Although heavily armed police operatives were seen around the protest routes, there has been no report of violent dispersal of protesters unlike the case in Lekki, Lagos.

• October 20, 2021

Hundreds of marchers staged protests across major roads in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, in commemoration of the one year anniversary of #EndSARS protests.

Despite heavy police presence, placard-carrying residents trooped out en-masse, first converging at Iwo road around 9:00 a.m., before marching through Idi Ape, Agodi Gate and the state secretariat.

The demonstrators, who were also protesting against bad governance and injustice of the Nigerian government carried placards with inscriptions such as:

“Free Igboho”, “Never Forget 20-10-20” and so on.

Although heavily armed police operatives were seen around the protest routes, there has been no report of violent dispersal of protesters unlike the case in Lekki, Lagos state where teargas canisters were unleashed.

The Gazette earlier on Wednesday reported that police arrested and brutalised unarmed protesters including journalists at Lekki toll gate.

An innocent baby was among the victims of the violent dispersal after it choked from hazardous teargas canisters.
