The Lagos government on Saturday provided a temporary furnished two-bedroom apartment for the family of Jumoke Oyeleke, who was killed by the police.

Ms Jumoke was killed on July 3, 2021 when the police shot indiscriminately at fleeing demonstrators during a ‘Yoruba Nation’ rally at the Ojota area of Lagos.

Peoples Gazette had reported that the police shot sporadically in the area to cart away the slain girl’s body in the pool of her blood, apparently to cover their tracks.

The young lady was denied first aid before she breathed her last, with the police in Lagos claiming that its officers did not fire a single live bullet at the rally.

When the mother, Ifeoluwa Oyeleke, visited the police station where the late Jumoke’s body was taken to, police officers threatened to shoot her and fire teargas at her and her brother.

The assistance by Lagos state government comes three months after popular Nigerian comedian and activist, Debo Adebayo, popularly known as Mr Macaroni, donated N500,000 to the family and asked Nigerians to help support the deceased family.

Represented by Titi Oshodi, his Senior Special Assistant on Administration, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu said the apartment was to alleviate the family’s immediate need.

The two-bedroom apartment is located at Irawo, in the Ikorodu area, where the mother of the victim was presented with a cheque of N1 million to begin a business.

Mr Sanwo-Olu said the state was taking further actions to ameliorate the family’s sufferings.

Reacting, Mrs Oyeleke thanked the state government for the gesture, pleading that “the government to help me find a profitable job, so I can train my children properly.

“The house is rented and I cannot afford to renew the rent after the three years that was paid for, so I would love to be employed profitably,” she added.
