Four persons have been confirmed dead and others unaccounted for after flood hit the Trademore Mega City estate in Lugbe, Abuja.

Eyewitness accounts said the rain started on Sunday at 8:00 p.m. and lasted till Monday morning, causing four deaths and the destruction of properties.

Some residents expressed shock at the event. According to them, the rain that caused the flood was not heavy enough to have resulted in flooding.

A resident known as Mr Japhet said he lost his properties, friends and valuables to the flood.

Another resident named Grace said she noticed the rain about 10:00 p.m. and expressed sadness at losing her supermarket to the flood.

Recounting that a similar occurrence happened last year, she, however, said the rain wasn’t as heavy as other days. She suspected that the cause of the flooding could have been a result of the canal from the estate or neighbouring drainages.

Relevant authorities were on-site to rescue people and restore calmness to the affected areas. There were broken fences, damaged houses and cars, injuries, and business premises destroyed by the flood were noticeable features at the scene.

Rescue officials at the scene sympathised with affected victims and called for proper town planning. They recalled that Nigerians were warned of flooding in waterline areas and houses on waterways at the beginning of the year.

They advised that Nigerians can avert flooding by improved drainages, building standard canals and proper town planning.
