Garba Shehu, other Aso Rock staff test positive for COVID-19

Mr Shehu says he has “symptoms of the disease – a trait connected with the omicron variant, adding that he has gone into isolation.”

Garba Shehu, spokesperson to President Muhammadu Buhari, has tested positive to COVID-19, prompting a Coronavirus scare among other presidency staff.

Mr Shehu confirmed this development on Saturday to Channels TV, explaining that he has “symptoms of the disease – a trait connected with the omicron variant, adding that he has gone into isolation and would go for further tests to ascertain his status.”

According to Channels TV, “President’s spokesman (Mr Shehu) who is fully vaccinated also affirmed that the Permanent Secretary at the State House, Tijjani Umar, and a few others in the Aso Rock have also undergone COVID-19 tests.”

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) has reported surge in number of COVID-19 infection cases reported in the country.

Earlier in the week, on Wednesday, NCDC reported 4,035 new cases. The highest single-day figure to be reported first index case of COVID-19 was reported in the county in 2020.

So far, in Nigeria, a total of “234709 cases have been confirmed, 212237 cases have been discharged and 2993 deaths have been recorded in 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory.”
