Police in the German state of Hesse on Monday arrested a soldier and seized weapons and ammunition from his home.

One of the man’s relatives was also arrested and a third suspect turned himself in, according to an announcement by the office of the Hesse state criminal police and the Hanau public prosecutor’s office.

The men were charged with illegally hoarding weapons and ammunition and for making right-wing extremist statements, according to a press release.

They said that officials seized extensive evidence, including live firearms, different types of ammunition, explosives, documents and data carriers.

Their investigations have continued, no further details were initially available.

The soldier is a voluntary conscript at a site in Pfullendorf in the state of Baden-Wuerttemberg, the site of a special operations training centre.

He was detained following a tip-off, dpa has learned.

The soldier’s father was reportedly detained and his brother turned himself in.

The authorities are investigating on suspicion of inciting hatred and violating weapons laws.

Police seized long guns and handguns, ammunition, a hand grenade and explosives.

Most of the material is not from Bundeswehr stocks, according to initial findings.

The hand grenade is probably from the former Yugoslavia.

The army is supporting the investigation, the Bundeswehr said.

The Special Forces Command (KSK) has made headlines several times due to ammunition incidents.

A cache of weapons including ammunition and explosives was found in the garden of a soldier from Saxony, for example.
