In a bid to nip in the bud further breakdown of law and order and prevent reprisals, the Gombe State Security Council, religious groups, and other stakeholders have ordered security for churches in the state.

According to Voice of Nigeria, the groups arrived at the resolution during a security meeting on Monday.

Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya, who chaired the meeting, noted that the meeting was necessary following the spread of violence on Friday.

VON reported that the violence was more targeted at churches and businesses in the state’s Billiri local government area.

The leadership tussle in the Tangale chiefdom degenerated into violence, claiming four people’s lives, following Abdu Buba Mai Shari II’s installation after the late Mai Tangle’s death in January.

The security council, which blamed the unrest on fake news via social media, urged security agencies to bring the perpetrators to justice.

The Commissioner for Internal Security and Ethical Orientation, Daudu Batari Zambuk, speaking to journalists, disclosed that the government had arrested 16 people.

The commissioner promised compensation and support for persons, families, and businesses affected by the violence.

“Government will set up a panel of inquiry to get to the remote and immediate causes of the incident to avert future occurrence. The council consoles the families of the deceased and prays for the quick recovery of the injured and those who lost property that God will replenish them,” Mr. Zambuk added.
