The “Light Up Movement”, a pressure group on electricity supply in Kogi, has asked the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) to end the regime of estimated billing of consumers and provide prepaid meters across the state.

“We are by this press conference, therefore, passing a Vote of No Confidence on the leadership of AEDC in Kogi State,” according to the movement.

The group head, Iliyasu Zakari, at a press conference on Saturday in Lokoja, said the call was in view of the prevailing high tariff and erratic power supply in the state.

Mr Zakari said residents of the state, especially the state capital, Lokoja, had for years suffered from disruptions in power supplies by the AEDC.

The group condemned the continuous rise in tariff occasioned by the estimated billings, saying they hardly reflect the true consumption by households and businesses.

Mr Zakari said the group’s attempt to engage the AEDC to “amicably resolve the issues,” was being rebuffed by the distribution company.

The body, according to him, has therefore taken a position that AEDC must stop estimated billing of consumers until they are ready to provide prepaid meters.
