Unidentified gunmen Saturday killed a polytechnic lecturer and injured another during an attack at the Burshin Fulani area of Bauchi metropolis, the police in the state have confirmed.

The Police Public Relation Officer (PPRO), Ahmed Wakil, who confirmed the incident, said the gunmen stormed the community in the early hours of Saturday and unleashed terror on the residents.

Mr Wakil said the gunmen, whose number could not be determined, attacked the community, killing one and injuring another person.

“Gunmen attacked Burshin Fulani village and killed one Abubakar Muhammad, a senior staff of the Federal Polytechnic, Bauchi.”

In its verified Facebook account, the school posted that Mr Muhammad was the chief engineer of the directorate of physical planning.

“His Funeral (Jana’iza) prayer as announced by the family will hold by 9:00 a.m. in Burshin Fulani Mosque, behind his house,” the school said on its Facebook page, praying to “Allah to forgive his shortcomings and “grant his soul Jannatil Firdausi.”

According to the police, Mr Muhammad “was shot in the neck and died on the spot. Policemen who rushed to the scene evacuated the victim to the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital (ATBUTH), Bauchi, where he was certified dead.”

The PPRO said, “Our patrol team stationed at the polytechnic gate on hearing gunshots from the direction at about 4:00 a.m. rushed to the area, on sighting the light of the patrol van the gunmen fled.

“The deceased came out to rescue his children who were struggling with some people at the gate, and immediately he emerged, they shot him,” Mr Wakil said.

The spokesperson said the State Commissioner of Police, Sylvester Alabi, has ordered the police to go after the gunmen and bring them to justice.

“Our men are going after them now, and very soon, they will get to them,” Mr Alabi said in the statement.
