The Islamic State of West Africa Province terrorists have reportedly attacked a military base and killed an unspecified number of soldiers, including one officer in Borno.

The insurgents, who specialise in attacking military formations, launched the attack in the new Marte town around the Lake Chad axis.

At least one officer and several soldiers were allegedly killed during a fierce gun battle that ensued during the attack, HumAngle reported.

However, the army spokesperson, Mohammed Yerima said he is not aware of the recent attack when contacted by phone Tuesday afternoon.

“Did you hear anything from us? If there’s anything, we will get back to you. Mr. Yerima, a brigadier-general, told Peoples Gazette.

ISWAP is a faction of the Boko Haram sect that launches deadly attacks within North-East Nigeria, Lake Chad, Niger, and northern Cameroon.

The jihadist fighters specialise in launching attacks on military formations that have led to the deaths of many frontline soldiers and other security operatives in Nigeria.

The insurgency war that has lasted over a decade has ravaged most communities in the North-east region of the country, accounting for thousands of civilians’ deaths with over two million persons displaced.

Despite spending billions of dollars fighting against the insurgents over the years, Abuja has yet to win the ongoing war against terrorism.
