Swedish Allsvenskan side, Mjällby, have reacted to the widespread allegations of age cheating levelled against its new Nigerian striker, Silas Nwankwo, in the last 48 hours.

The former Nasarrawa United striker, who finished as top scorer in the 2020/2021 season of the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL), completed his move to the Swedish side earlier this week.

Upon announcing the signing on their social media channels, the player’s age came under heavy scrutiny, with many commentators claiming that he looked older than an 18-year old.

The club have now publicly backed Silas Nwankwo though, with the director of football at the club, Hasse Larsson, speaking strongly in his support when he appeared on Swedish Public Radio.

Mr Larsson said, “That’s rubbish. We have full confidence in his management and that his age is right. We have no intention of taking this further.”

The interview came shortly after the striker made his debut for the club in a 3-2 victory over BK Olympic.
