The measure is to produce a template to regulate the operations of Islamic organisations.

• November 8, 2021

The Kano government has approved the constitution of a committee to regulate the activities of International Islamic religious foundations operating in the state.

The measure is meant to produce a template for regulating the operations of such foundations, being run by individual clerics or organizations.

The commissioner for information, Muhammed Garba, said the measure would help in the documentation, monitoring, evaluation and assessment of these organisations.

He explained that as part of its mandate, the committee would establish the legitimacy of such international organisations, examine their profiles, registration certificates, contacts, affiliations and sources of funding.

The committee would be chaired by the Chief Imam of Kano, Sani Zaharaddeen, while the commissioner for religious affairs, Muhammad Tahar-Adam, would serve as its co-chair.

Representatives would be drawn from the Qadiriyya, Izala and Tijjaniyya sects, the state police command, State Security Service, Nigeria Immigration Service, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, and the Nigeria Vigilante Group.

Other members of the committee include the Muslim Lawyers Association, Bureau for Land Management, Kano State Urban Planning and Development Authority, Ministries of Justice, Education and that of Health, as well as the Emirate Council.
