The Lagos government says a 500-bed psychiatric hospital and rehabilitation centre to care for persons with mental health issues will soon be completed at Ketu Ejirin local council development area.

The Commissioner for Health, Akin Abayomi, disclosed this known on Tuesday at the Lagos Mental Health Conference held on Victoria Island.

Mr Abayomi explained that the project’s second phase would be a 1,000-bed psychiatric hospital and rehabilitation centre to address mental health issues in the state further.

He explained that on completion of the projects, the state would have more facilities to treat those with mental health issues.

According to the health commissioner, research has shown that mental health cases have increased tremendously, particularly since the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic.

He mentioned that the pandemic brought undue stress and pressure on people due to the harsh economic condition.

The commissioner disclosed that the government would introduce an Integrated Mental Health Delivery System to ensure collaboration between the public and the government in providing mentally challenged individuals care.
