The judicial panel of inquiry and restitution for victims of police brutality sitting in Lagos has awarded N7.5 million to a petitioner who was reportedly detained for six years without trial by the police.

The petitioner, Mr. Chidibere Nwadi, said that he spent six years in illegal detention because he could not afford the bribe requested by officers of the police, Punch reported.

Chairperson of the panel, Doris Okuwobi, upheld that the petitioner suffered unduly in the hands of police officers and delivered the judgment accordingly alongside the presentation of a cheque of N7.5m as compensation.
