The Lagos State House of Assembly is set to establish an institute for the training of law enforcement agents, primarily the police.

Lawmakers in the state made their positions known as they read the bill for creation of a law enforcement training institute for the second time on Tuesday.

Mudashiru Obasa, the Speaker of the House, who presided over the meeting, hailed the bill as very significant, saying that it should have the provisions that would make it a good law.

He assigned the bill to the House Judiciary Committee, which will report in a few weeks.

Victor Akande, chairman of the Committee on Judiciary and Public Petitions, said the law was long overdue during the debate.

“Policing in Lagos State has a little lacuna. Thus we have to put up a centre for the training of our own to teach them the modern way of doing it,” he said.

Several lawmakers said the institute will contribute to modernising security institutions in the state and equip them with knowledge of technology in intelligence and prosecution.
