Lagos: Vehicles burnt, movement disrupted as another Otedola Bridge fire blazes

Saturday’s fire on the Otedola Bridge marks the umpteenth time such disaster will be disrupting commuting on the ever busy highway.

A major fire broke out on Saturday morning after a multi-vehicle crash on Micheal Otedola Bridge in Lagos with no fewer than seven vehicles burnt.

Nosa Okunbor, spokesperson for Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, LASEMA, told People’s Gazette that the fire accident happened around 2:00 a.m. Saturday morning.

A video shared online by the state’s traffic management agency, @followlastma, showed that the fire incident involved two tankers, a trailer and some cars.

No casualties from the fire have been reported by the authorities.

The Lagos emergency responders from LASEMA, LATSMA, Lagos Fire Service and the police are on ground.

The Director-General, Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, Oke-Osanyitolu confirmed that the rescue team have been at the bridge to douse the fire as of 6:00 a.m. He said the fire was already contained by the team and “mop up is being concluded at about 6:00 a.m. Saturday and recovery effort is ongoing.’’

There have been traffic logjam on the Ogudu axis of the road while the accidents vehicles have been evacuated to one side of the road, an update from the state traffic agency said.

Barely six months ago, a fire accident involving a fuel tanker and haulage vehicle caused major commotion on the route. The tanker which conveyi diesel exploded on the bridge and burnt for several hours making the road impassable for travellers. No casualty was recorded, albeit.

Yet, authorities have not been able to pinpoint the cause(s) of the repeated fire burst at the Bridge or provide a preventive measure.

The cause of the fire incident has not been reported by the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency.
