A police station in Isinweke Local Government Area of Imo state has been set ablaze, following the murder of two siblings Chinanu & Chinyere Okonkwo by a yet to be identified officer.

A Twitter blog, @imosocials, in a post on Tuesday detailed that the station was razed by youths of Ihitte/Uboma, who were angered by the extrajudicial killing of the two siblings.

The youths were also said to have dumped the corpses of the victims in front of the station.

“Angry youths of Ihitte/Uboma just burnt down a Police Station in Isinweke L.G.A following the killing of 2 siblings ‘ Chinanu & Chinyere Okonkwo’ by a trigger happy yet-to-be identified policeman. They also dumped the bodies of the victims at the station,” @imosocials tweeted.

Confirming the incident to Peoples Gazette, the state’s police spokesperson Ikeokwu Rowland said an intervention team has been sent to the area to restore normalcy.

“The police have sent an intervention team to the area to restore normalcy, “He said.

Extrajudicial killings of unarmed civilians is a trend with the Nigerian police. In 2020, their activities led to the historic #EndSARS protest that rocked major cities across Nigeria, as there were outcries on the unchecked excesses of the now disbanded Special Anti-Robbery Squad unit of the Nigerian police force.

The protest which escalated to becoming a global agitation, forced the state governors to set-up judicial panels to seek redress for victims.

Despite setting up judicial panels to address extrajudicial killings, trigger-happy policemen are still wielding guns, opening fire on unarmed civilians.
