Nigeria is on fire, our security system has collapsed: Senator Adeyemi
Senator Smart Adeyemi (APC Kogi West), on Tuesday, said Nigeria risks being consumed by the present wave of insecurity in the country should President Muhammadu Buhari fail to seek help for the country.
Speaking at the senate plenary in a passionate, teary voice, Mr Adeyemi, a member of the All Progressive Congress, said insecurity in the country has taken a dangerous turn that no one should be silent about it.
Lamenting increased insecurity across the country in spite of huge resources voted for security agencies to combat insecurity, Mr Adeyemi said it is time for Buhari to wake up and call for foreign support.
“Let nobody deceive us Mr President. Billions of naira has been voted for security service but nothing is coming out of it. We should not wait until our country is burnt. Let us shout and call for foreign support,” Mr Adeyemi said. “I am an APC man and I support my party. But the president should know that it has gotten to a point where APC members who support the party can no longer keep quiet.”
“The president must rise to the occasion. The nation is on fire. The president must rise to the occasion. It cost us nothing to get foreign support. We must bring in people to save this country or else we will be consumed. The president must know that this is a bad time for our nation,” he said.
Mr Adeyemi added that the National Assembly be shut down if lawmakers cannot join in seeking a lasting solution to insecurity in the country.
“We must look for foreign support to save this nation. They are killing people in the East, West and North. Let us shut down this national assembly if we cannot rise up to the occasion,” he said.
It is however not clear if the president would pay any attention to Mr Adeyemi’s alarm. Last week, Mr Buhari’s spokesman Femi Adesina said the president is not bothered by the constant criticisms and calls for action by citizens.
Another presidential spokesman, Garba Shehu, expressed the administration’s knack for deflecting blame, saying the increasing insecurity in the country is the handwork of those who have determined to make insecurity a narrative in the run up to the next general elections in 2023.
Despite many cases of kidnapping for ransom, banditry and killings across the country, Mr Shehu blamed the Nigerian media for portraying insecurity in the country as something new just to rubbish the regime of Mr Buhari.
