North Korea says Squid Game exposes immorality, corruption of South Korea
North Korea has said that the popular Netflix show ‘Squid Game’ reflects the immorality and deep seated corruption of South Korea.
State-run propaganda website Arirang Meari said that the TV show is representative of the “sad reality of the beastly South Korean society,” adding that corruption is commonplace in the South.
The outlet wrote on Tuesday about Netflix’s K-drama “Squid Game”, saying the show reflects the “the reality of capitalist society,” calling South Korea an “unequal society where people are treated like chess pieces.”
“Squid Game makes people realise the sad reality of the beastly South Korean society in which human beings are driven into extreme competition, and their humanity is wiped out,” Arirang Meari said. (as translated).
“Squid Game” first premiered on Netflix in September and has skyrocketed to the top of the streaming platform, currently being boasted of as the most streamed TV show worldwide as the streaming platform recorded about 111 million views within the first month of its release.
The TV show tells the story of 456 South Koreans who volunteer to play deadly challenges crafted from children’s games in a bid to win the sum of $38 million.
The players, all saddled with huge debt, are involved in a game where they kill each other or risk being killed to claim the prize money goes to the final winner.
