Rivers #EndSARS panel concludes sitting, strikes out 78 petitions

Mr. Uriri said the reports and the reserved petitions including recommendations will be submitted to the state government for consideration and action.

The Rivers Judicial Commission of inquiry against police brutality on Tuesday ended its sitting in Port Harcourt, a hearing that started on November 24, 2020.

On October 22, 2020, the state governor, Nyesom Wike inaugurated the panel chaired by retired a justice, Chukwunoye Uriri.

The commission was borne out of the federal government’s directives that states should set up a judicial panel to hear cases of police brutality, following the #EndSARS protests that lasted close to two weeks last October, with several deaths recorded.

#EndSARS protesters were protesting against years of police brutality and constant killings of youth across the country.

On the night of October 20, 2020, the Nigerian Army killed dozens of unarmed protesters at the Lekki toll gate. The military has since denied the attack despite several proofs of fatalities recorded by eyewitnesses.
