U.S. President Joe Biden is set to travel to the Polish city of Rzeszow on Friday, about 65 kilometres from the Ukrainian border.

It is to view the humanitarian operation for the millions of refugees who have fled the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

Poland has a long border on its east with Ukraine.
Some 2.24 million people have fled to the EU country since the start of Russia’s offensive more than a month ago.

Mr Biden was also set to meet U.S. soldiers stationed in Poland, after which he would go to Warsaw for talks with Polish leaders, including President Andrzej Duda.

He was also scheduled to deliver a speech from Warsaw’s Royal Castle during his two-day visit to Poland, a spokesperson for the U.S. Embassy in Warsaw told dpa on Friday.

Pawel Soloch, the head of Duda’s National Security Office, said there would likely also be a meeting between Mr Biden and the Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki.
He said the planning for Mr Biden’s visit was not done far in advance, as it is usually the case with visits by U.S. presidents, and that therefore events might be arranged at short notice.
