SEMA to use radio jingles, rallies, other measures to address disasters in Ebonyi

SEMA says it’s also partnering the media, Red Cross, National Emergency Management Agency and community leaders.

The State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) in Ebonyi has rolled out plans to check incidents of fire outbreak, flooding, windstorm and other disasters in the state in the coming year. 

Kenneth Oziomaeze, the Executive Secretary, SEMA, in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria in Abakaliki on Monday, also proffered solutions to mitigate issues of flooding in the state.

He said the agency had embarked on public sensitsation at the urban and rural levels, and planned on using radio jingles, town hall meetings and rallies to enlighten the state residents on disaster prevention and response.

Mr Oziomaeze added that SEMA in Ebonyi was partnering the media, Nigerian Red Cross Society, National Emergency Management Agency and community leaders to prevent disasters.

“Every season has disaster that it associates with and we are intensifying meetings with stakeholders and community leaders at the grassroots level to mitigate emergencies.

“We have plans for 2022 on disaster risk management and disaster crisis management which involve going for search and rescue, relief interventions, rehabilitation and reintegration.

“We give so much attention to risk management for prevention which has to do with preparedness and mitigation,” the Executive Secretary said.
