South-South trump other regions in INEC’s fresh online voter registration exercise

South-South has 1,276,201 applicants, South-West 1,078,232, North-Central 864,873, North-West 832,402, and the North-East and South-East have 670,874 and 304,595 respectively.

Ahead of the 2023 general election, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) says it has received over five million applications in the ongoing online continuous voter registration (CVR) exercise.

INEC in a new report revealed that the number of new registrants has risen to 5,027,204.

Data released by INEC ranked South-South as the region with the highest number of enrollees with 1,276,201 registrations, followed by the South-West region with 1,078,232 and North-Central with 864,873 registrations.

It further detailed that about 832,402 Nigerians from states in the North-West region have enrolled for the online registration exercise while the North-East and South-East regions have 670,874 and 304595 applicants respectively.

The commission had In June 2020 launched an online registration platform to make the voters registration process easier and to allow Nigerians request updates to their voter information before completing the process at designated centres.

The report placed Delta as the state with the highest number of enrolees, accounting for 372,597 of the over 5 million Nigerians that have commenced the online voters’ registrations exercise as of Monday.

Bayelsa state sat at the number two spot with 309,385 and Edo followed closely with 244,027 registrations.

The electoral body disclosed that only 2,563,068 of the over 5 million Nigerians that enrolled for the online registration exercise have completed their online and physical registration.

The electoral umpire further revealed that both the online pre-registration and physical registration will continue simultaneously until the exercise is suspended in June.
