Students urge govt to stop sea incursion into Ondo riverine communities

The association said the destruction caused by sea incursion resulted from crude oil exploration.

The National Association of Ilaje Students (NAIS) have called on the governor of Ondo State, Rotimi Akeredolu, and President Muhammadu Buhari to intervene in the sea incursion into some riverine communities in the state.

In a statement released on Monday, the association said, if not checked, the incursion was capable of wiping off the oil-rich communities in Ilaje local government area of the state.

No fewer than 200 residents have been affected by sea incursion in Aiyetoro, Mese, Gbagira, Idiogba, Awoye and neighbouring communities.

President of the association, Moses Omotade, said they organised a walk at the weekend to draw the government’s attention to the plight of residents of the communities.

He noted that the means of livelihood of the communities were fishing and boat making.

Tagged, “Fear of Extinction”, he said the walk was organised at Igbokoda, and appealed to the state and federal governments to tackle the challenge.

“We also appeal for provision of a refugee camp where all affected residents can be accommodated with adequate care and support from the state and federal government and oil multinationals,” he added.
