TCN fixes underground power cables damaged by IBB Golf Club since 2019

TCN blames the lack of repair kits, shortage of skilled labour and COVID-19 for the nearly two years delay.

Nearly two years after a faulty portion of one of the 132 KV Katampe–Central area underground transmission cables were destroyed by the IBB Golf Club, the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) says it has repaired the damage.

“The delay in the repair was due to the lack of cable repair kit and expertise required to undertake the repair work in the country as well as the COVID-19 pandemic,” according to TCN’s General Manager, Public Affairs, Ndidi Mbah.

In a statement issued on Wednesday in Abuja, Mrs Mbah recalled that a portion of the underground transmission cable line – 1 that passes through the Golf Club, was damaged by an excavation machine working for the Club on December 23, 2019.

The Katampe-Central Area 132KV transmission line – 1 supplies power to the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) for strategic areas, such as the Central Area Business District, the 3 Arm-Zone, SSS Headquarters, NNPC Headquarters, Federal Secretariat, and environs.

Repair works have been completed and the cable energised at about 3.09 p.m. on November 1, according to Mrs Mbah.

“Following the successful restoration of the 132KV underground transmission cable line – 1, TCN now has bulk transmission line redundancy (N-1). This implies that if there is a sudden failure of one line, the second will be available,” she said.

Mrs Mbah said that with the repair and energising of the second underground cable line – 1, this means that TCN can now supply more bulk power to the AEDC.
